What is Amazonite?

Amazonite is a captivating green tectosilicate mineral that belongs to the potassium feldspar group known as microcline. Its name, “amazonite,” draws inspiration from the Amazon River, although it’s uncertain whether the green stones found there were truly amazonite. Initially referred to as “Amazon stone,” the gemstone eventually evolved into the name “amazonite.”

Despite no direct occurrences near the actual Amazon River, the gemstone’s lush greens and blues evoke the vibrant hues associated with the Amazon rainforest – paying homage to the river’s natural beauty.

Characteristics of Amazonite Beads

1. Colour: The most striking feature of Amazonite beads is their captivating colour. With shades of blue/green turquoises and natural browns, some beads have banding while others display a mottled pattern. The shades can vary from pale and translucent to deeper and more intense depending on the mineral composition and impurities present.

2. Luster and Texture: Amazonite beads typically have a vitreous or glassy lustre. Their texture can range from smooth to slightly rough due to the presence of natural inclusions. I have used frosted amazonite in my jewellery designs which has a soft, matte finish, with a subtle shimmer that catches the light and gives it a frosted or velvety appearance.

3. Size and Shape: Amazonite beads come in various shapes and sizes, making them versatile for jewellery-making projects. From round beads to oval, chips to irregular shapes, there's an option to suit every design.

4. Healing Properties: Amazonite is believed to possess various metaphysical properties and is often associated with emotional healing, balancing energies, and improving communication. It is considered a soothing stone, helping to calm the mind and reduce stress.

Uses of Amazonite Beads

1. Jewellery Making: Amazonite beads are a popular choice among jewellery makers due to their enchanting colours. I have used them as focal beads. I think copper provides the perfect backdrop to enhance and showcase the unique colours and patterns of these beads.

2. Home Decor: Beyond jewellery, you can use Amazonite beads to decorate your living space. String them together as a curtain or incorporate them into wind chimes, dreamcatchers, or even table centrepieces to introduce a calming and earthy vibe.

3. Crystal Healing: Many crystal healers believe that Amazonite has significant metaphysical properties. By wearing or holding Amazonite beads, one may experience a sense of serenity, improved communication, and harmony in relationships. It is also thought to alleviate anxiety and promote a sense of balance and self-discovery.

Caring for Amazonite Beads

To ensure the longevity and beauty of your Amazonite beads, it is essential to care for them properly. Here are a few tips to consider:

  1. Gentle Cleaning: Amazonite is relatively durable, with a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Clean your Amazonite beads with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any dirt or debris using a mild soap and water solution. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the surface of the beads. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents or abrasive materials that may cause scratches.

  2. Avoid Excessive Heat and Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to heat and sunlight can fade the colour of Amazonite beads. It is advisable to store them in a cool, dry place when not in use.

  3. Store your Amazonite beads properly: When you are not wearing your Amazonite jewellery, it is important to store it properly. Keep your Amazonite beads in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. You can also store them in a jewellery box or pouch to protect them from scratches and other damage.

  4. Avoid Chemicals: Avoid abrasive cleaners or solutions containing harsh chemicals, as they can harm the delicate stones. Soaking or scrubbing them vigorously can cause damage. Instead, lightly dab the metal with the cleaning solution using a soft cloth or a soft-bristle toothbrush. Avoid rubbing or brushing the stones.

The natural beauty of Amazonite is breathtaking. Its soothing tones of blues and greens are the very essence of lush forests and serene waters. Amazonite’s distinctive traits make it a wonderful addition to your jewellery collection and you can experience its power and allure for yourself.
