Jewellery Storage: Tips and Tricks for Keeping Your Accessories Safe and Organised

Updated: May 28

A bit of organisation goes a long way. If, like me, you like wearing jewellery, then you'll already know what a hassle it is to find that missing pendant or untangle your favourite necklace when you want to wear it. With a few handy storage hacks and tricks up your sleeve, your jewellery will never be damaged, tangled or lost again.

1. Clean & Dry

Before storing your jewellery, make sure it is clean and dry. Use a soft cloth to remove any dirt, oils, or sweat that may have accumulated. This step is crucial as it prevents damage and tarnishing that can occur over time and keeps your jewellery looking its best.

2. Separate and Organise

To avoid scratches and tangles, store each piece of jewellery separately. Overcrowding can lead to tangling, scratching, and damage. Use individual compartments or small jewellery boxes to keep items organised. This prevents them from rubbing against each other and causing damage

Handy tip - Keep chain necklaces in mini sealable plastic bags. Leave the clasp hanging outside of the bag before sealing it. This prevents knots and tangles from forming.

3. Use anti-tarnish materials

Tarnishing is a common issue with certain metals like copper and silver. To prevent this, store your jewellery in anti-tarnish pouches or use anti-tarnish strips in your storage containers. These materials absorb moisture and chemicals that can cause tarnishing – keeping your jewellery looking shiny and new.

Handy tip - The box your jewellery arrives in from Copperleaf Studio contains an anti-tarnish insert that's ideal for storing and protecting your jewellery. You can also cut the insert into smaller pieces and line individual compartments of jewellery boxes. This saves space and you can also re-use or recycle the box.

4. Avoid exposure to sunlight

Direct sunlight and high humidity can damage jewellery, causing discolouration or warping. Sunlight can also fade gemstones. Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from windows or areas prone to moisture. Consider using a jewellery box with a lid or a drawer to provide additional protection.

5. Consider using a jewellery box or organiser

Investing in a quality jewellery box or organiser can help keep your collection safe and easily accessible. Look for one with compartments, hooks, and padded slots to store different types of jewellery, such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. This will prevent tangling and make it easier to find specific pieces.

6. Be cautious with delicate items

Delicate jewellery, such as fine chains or gemstone pieces, requires extra care. Store them in soft pouches or lined compartments to prevent tangling or scratching. Consider using a padded jewellery roll for travelling to protect delicate pieces during transit. Keep thinner, dainty chains away from heavier ones. Chains are more likely to tangle up due to weight differences.

7. Remove jewellery before activities

It's important to remove and properly store your jewellery before activities that may expose it to potential damage. This includes sleeping, showering, swimming, and exercising, or using harsh chemicals. By doing so, you minimise the risk of losing or damaging your precious pieces.

8. Avoid moisture

You should regularly clean your jewellery, but do not allow it to stay wet. Before putting away your jewellery, always ensure all pieces stored together are clean and completely dry.

It's frustrating to have to search through a tangled mess of accessories every time you want to wear something. Keeping your jewellery safe, clean and in good shape is one of the best ways to ensure it lasts for as long as possible. By following these guidelines, you can ensure your jewellery remains in excellent condition for years to come. Proper storage and care will not only preserve its beauty but also protect your investment.
